CJP Isa questions tax collection by Karachi cantonment board
ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing till October 13 in a case against the collection of taxes by the Karachi Cantonment Board from restaurants, banks and poultry farms.
The court also served notice to the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) for assistance in the case.
A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, heard the case.
During the course of proceedings, the CJP remarked that the federal or provincial governments could impose taxes, but questioned that how cantonment board could impose tax on professionals.
On this, the additional attorney general (AAG) said that the local government was also an elected body and authorised to impose
taxes.
CJP Isa asked if a tax was imposed on lawyers, then would it be collected by local body.
Justice Athar Minallah said that the objection was that the local government couldn’t impose tax under Article 163 of the constitution.
The CJP said that “we couldn’t ignore the constitution, adding that how the authorisation of tax collection could be given to someone else”.
The court adjourned further hearing of the case till October 13.
