Three-member committee probes IUB drug scandal

Pakistan

Committee will furnish CM Naqvi with report within 72 hours

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Punjab's interim Chief Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi on Monday constituted a three-member committee to investigate "drug peddling and immoral activities" issue that surfaced at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB).

This high-level committee comprises a provincial secretary and two DIGs. The committee will provide a report within 72 hours.

CM Naqvi emphasised that all individuals involved in this disgraceful incident would be dealt with according to law. He also stressed the need for a safer and morally upright society.

The committee, led by Secretary Mines and Minerals Babar Aman Babar and including DIG Amin Bukhari and DIG Raja Faisal, was tasked with thoroughly examining all aspects of the controversy, identifying the individuals involved, and submitting a report to the chief minister.

The issue originated from the arrest of the university's Director of Finance, Muhammad Abu Bakr, who was found in possession of crystal ice and other drugs during a police search.

Similarly, the university's chief security officer, Syed Ejaz Hussain Shah, was arrested under similar circumstances three days ago.

Subsequent examination of their mobile phones revealed inappropriate videos, images of students and officials, and chats, prompting police to submit a comprehensive report to the Punjab chief minister.

The university administration has described the incident as unfortunate and said it has already taken appropriate action.
