Qureshi vows to stand with PTI, Cheema bids farewell to party

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi and ex-PTI leader Musarrat Jamshed Cheema were on Tuesday rearrested from outside Adiala Jail after the IHC had ordered their release.

"I am not leaving the party. I am with the party, and I will stay with the party," Mr Qureshi was quoted as saying in the statement.

Earlier today, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the release of Mr Qureshi.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, presiding over the case at the IHC imposed a conditional release for Mr Qureshi, requiring the submission of an affidavit by his legal representatives.

Today, during the court proceedings, Mr Qureshi's lawyers successfully filed the necessary affidavit, satisfying the court's conditions.

On the other hand, the PTI suffered a fresh blow as Jamshed Cheema and his wife Musarrat Cheema decided to part ways with embattled Imran Khan.

The development was confirmed by their lawyer who stated that he held separate meetings with them in jail. “I am confident that they would quit the PTI as soon as they come out of jail,” he said.

The husband-wife duo had been detained for the last 12 days in the wake of the May 9 protests that erupted following the arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan in a corruption case related to the Al-Qadir Trust.

Hours ago, key PTI leader Shireen Mazari announced quitting the party as well as “active politics” after being arrested for the fifth time in a row, even though the IHC had ordered her release.
