SJC sends appointment letter to parliament for final approval
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Monday assented to the appointment of Justice (retd) Iqbal Hameedur Rehman as the chief justice (CJ) of the Federal Shariat Court (FSC).
A meeting of the SJC, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, approved the appointment. Sources said the SJC sent the appointment decision to the parliamentary committee for final assent.
Background
Justice Rehman, son of famed CJP Hamoodur Rehman, served as senior judge of the apex court from Feb 24, 2013 to October 24, 2016 before being appointed as FSC CJ. In 2016, he tendered a voluntary resignation as the SC judge.
Before that, he served as Islamabad High Court IHC) CJ from Jan 3, 2011 to February 22, 2013 having been nominated by the then PM Yusuf Raza Gillani.
His father CJP Hamoodur Rehman had come to the fore after he wrote a report titled “Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report” assessing Pakistan’s political-military involvement in East Pakistan from 1947 to 1971.
