Former CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry tops the list with 79 notices

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - In the last two decades, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken a total of 204 suo motu notices, as per the data provided by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The data also reveals that 14 chief justices have held the position of CJ in the Supreme Court since 2000. Former CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry tops the list with 79 notices, followed by Saqib Nisar with 47 and Anwar Zaheer Jamali with 25 notices. 

Former chief justice Irshad Hassan Khan, who held the position of chief justice from January 26, 2000 to January 6, 2002, took five suo motu notices during his tenure. On the other hand, former chief justice Bashir Jahangiri did not take any suo motu notice during his tenure from January 7, 2002 to January 31, 2002.

Former chief justice Sheikh Riaz Ahmed took four suo motu notices between Feb 1, 2002 and Dec 31, 2003, while Nazim Hussain Siddiqui, who held the position from December 31, 2003, to June 29, 2005, took six notices during his tenure.

During his first tenure as CJ SC from June 30, 2005 to November 3, 2007, Iftikhar Chaudhary took 25 suo motu notices. He was appointed as CJ SC for the second time from March 22, 2009 to December 11, 2013, during which he took a total of 54 suo motu notices. Thus, he took a total of 79 suo motu notices in a period of 7 years and 2 months.

Former chief justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani took 10 suo motu notices between December 12, 2013, and July 5, 2014, while Nasirul Mulk took nine notices between July 6, 2014 and August 16, 2015.

Jawad S. Khawaja took four suo motu notices and Anwar Zaheer Jamali took 25 notices during his tenure. Saqib Nisar took 47 suo motu notices during his entire period.

Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, who served as the chief justice from January 18, 2019 to December 20, 2019, did not take any suo motu notice during his tenure. Justice Gulzar Ahmed, who held the position from December 21, 2019 to February 1, 2022, took nine notices, out of which three were taken in 2020 and six were taken in 2021.

The current chief justice, Umar Ata Bandial, assumed the post of CJ on February 2, 2022, and has taken five suo motu notices so far. The data provided by the Supreme Court of Pakistan shows the varying levels of activism by the chief justices over the years.
