SHC bars police from arresting Azam Swati in more cases

KARACHI – The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday barred police from arresting PTI Senator Azam Swati in additional cases while also seeking details of the cases already registered against him in the province.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Mohammad Karim Khan Agha issued the directives while hearing a petition filed by Swati’s son, seeking discharge of all cases against his father. The cases were registered over controversial statements against state institutions.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took the PTI leader into custody on Nov 27 and since then he is facing cases in Balochistan and Sindh. Currently, he is in the custody of the Qambar Shahdakot police on a three-day physical remand.

During Monday s hearing, the petitioner informed the court that the Balochistan High Court (BHC) had quashed all the cases against the senator.

Justice Mohammad Karim Khan Agha has sought details of all the cases registered against Mr Swati in the province by Dec 14. The Sindh prosecutor general requested the bench to grant more time to gather the details. However, the court rejected the request, saying a case would be lodged against him if the details are not submitted on next hearing.

Earlier in the day, Mr Swati’s son filed a separate petition for early hearing of the case against his father’s arrest. The high court has clubbed his both petitions and issued notices to the Sindh inspector general and the prosecutor general.
