Newly-appointed COAS, CJCSC hold separate meetings with PM, President
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – A meeting between President Dr Arif Ali and the newly appointed Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad is underway at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday.
The meeting is being held minutes after President Arif Alvi signed a summary signed the summary and approved the appointment of Lieutenant General Asim Munir as the next chief of army staff and Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

On the other hand, nominated Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Minir separately called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.
The Prime Minister congratulated Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza and Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir and expressed his good wishes for their new responsibilities.
The Prime Minister hoped that under their leadership, the armed forces will amicably deal with the challenges of national security and continue to play important role in complete elimination of the menace of terrorism from the country.
President signs summary to appoint Lt Gen Asim Munir as new COAS, CJCSC
Earlier, President Arif Alvi signed summary forwarded by PM Shehbaz Sharif on the appointment of new army chief General Asim Munir and Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad.
Today, the hovernment decided to appoint Lieutenant General Asim Munir as new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb made the announcement on Twitter, saying the premier had made the choice while exercising his constitutional powers. She further said that Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza had been picked as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
The information minister added that the summary of the appointments has been sent to President Arif Alvi for ratification.
Speaking to the media minutes after the announcement was made, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the “advice” had been forwarded to President Arif Alvi.
He said that all matters had been settled according to the law and the Constitution, calling on the nation to refrain from viewing it through a “political lens”.
He expressed the hope that the president would not make the appointment “controversial” and would endorse the advice of the premier.
Lt General Asim Munir is the senior most officer after outgoing Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa and is currently serving as Quartermaster General in the Pakistan Army.
Lt-Gen Munir entered the service via the Officers Training School (OTS) programme in Mangla and was commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment.
Lt-Gen Munir commanded troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier under Gen Bajwa, who was then Commander X Corps. He was appointed DG of the Military Intelligence in early 2017 and then ISI Director General in October 2018.
Eight months later, Lt-Gen Munir was posted Gujranwala Corps Commander. He was moved to the GHQ as Quartermaster General two years later.
Lt-Gen Munir is the recipient of the Sword of Honour from the 17th course of the Officers Training School in Mangla. Also, he is the recipient of the Hilal-i-Imtiaz.
He is a ‘Hafiz-e-Quran’ who memorised the Quran during his posting in Saudi Arabia as Lt Colonel.
Government retains Lt General Asim Munir
The Federal Government had retained Lt General Asim Munir under relevant ammended rules.
Gen Munir was scheduled to retire on November 27. He had submitted his retirement application to the defence ministry. However, the defence ministry did not accept the request for retirement and decided to retain Gen Munir.

Who is Lt Gen Asim Munir?
The recently designated army chief – Lieutenant General Asim Munir – is the senior most general in the list of army officers. After completing his training from the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul and Officers Training School Mangla, he joined the Pakistan Army.
During training, Lt Gen Asim Munir was awarded with the sword of honour for showing best performance. Also, he is the recipient of the Hilal-i-Imtiaz.

After training, Asim Munir commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment. Lt-Gen Munir commanded troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier under Gen Bajwa, who was then Commander X Corps.
Gen Asim remained the Force Commander in the Northern Areas in 2014 and also worked as the director-general Military Intelligence in 2017.
After getting promoted to the rank of a three-star general in 2018, Asim Munir was appointed director-general Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He was then appointed the Corps Commander Gujranwala in June 2019. He has been serving as Quartermaster General in the General Headquarters (GHQ) since October 2021.
