Four killed as dust storm, rain hit different parts of Karachi

KARACHI (Dunya News) - Four people were killed including a child as dust storm, rain hit different parts of Karachi today (Tuesday).
According to details a child was killed when a wall collapsed in the Sher Shah area, while three others were also killed in rain related incidents.
On the other hand the weather in Karachi became pleasant after strong winds and rainfall in different parts of the city. Rainfall was recorded in Sarjani Town, Shahrah-e-Faisal, II Chandigarh Road, Kemrai and in the airport areas.
Due to rain severe traffic jams were observed in different parts of the city. Many areas of Karachi were left without electricity due to the severe weather conditions including Sohrab Goth, Safora, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Johar.
Earlier Pakistan Meteorological Department (PDM) had said that extremely hot and dry weather will continue today (Tuesday) in Karachi, Hyderabad, Shaeed- Banzirabad, Badin and Mirpurkhas districts due to the cyclonic storm “Tauktae”.
It had predicted a few dust/thunderstorm-rain accompanied with gusty winds of 30-50 Kmph may occur in Tharparker and Umerkot districts during next 12 hours.
Sea Conditions will remain rough till today evening and fishermen of Sindh are advised to avoid going into deep sea. They can resume their activities from tomorrow (May 19). This is the final alert in this regard, the met office informed, said PDM.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PDM) had stated, “The very severe cyclonic storm Tauktae after intensifying into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm crossed Indian Gujarat last night, weakened into a Severe Cyclonic Storm laying over Rajasthan, India.”
On the other hand, a major cyclone packing ferocious winds and threatening a destructive storm made landfall in western India, disrupting the country’s response to its devastating Covid-19 outbreak.
At least 12 people died over the weekend and on Monday in torrential rains and winds as Cyclone Tauktae, according to press reports the biggest to hit western India in 30 years, swept over the Arabian Sea with Gujarat state in its sights.
The cyclonic system has been packing winds of 155-165 kilometres per hour (95-100 miles per hour) gusting up to 185 kmph, the Indian Meteorological Department tweeted.
In waterlogged and windswept Mumbai, where authorities on Monday closed the airport and urged people to stay indoors, authorities shifted 580 Covid patients "to safer locations" from three field hospitals.
Six people died and nine were injured as the storm lashed Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, the chief minister’s office said.
