UN should declare blasphemy a crime, demands Chairman Pakistan Ulema Council

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Chairman Pakistan Ulema Council Maulana Tahir Ashrafi said on Monday that anyone who insults the prophets cannot be called peaceful. We are all saddened by the blasphemous caricatures, insult of religion in the name of freedom must stop.

Maulana Tahir Ashrafi, while announcing to take up this issue in the OIC, has demanded that the United Nations make blasphemy a crime so that this it may never happen again.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, he said that Prime Minister Imran Khan fought the case of Muslims in the UN, he raised the issue of Islamophobia at the global stage. This is not a political issue but a common one that affects all of us, he added.

He said that we want a permanent solution of the problem, which can only be achieved through global legislation. In this regard, the government is in touch with all Islamic countries and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will table a resolution at the OIC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

He said that we are doing what we can to the best of our ability and Pakistan’s view is being appreciated in the Islamic and Arab world. But, everyone has to play their role to eradicate extremism.

Maulana Tahir Ashrafi said that peaceful protest is everyone’s right. There are protests against the blasphemous caricatures all over the world but appealed that public property should not be damaged during the protests.
