New Delhi: Indian rights activists demand release of Pakistani doctor

Pakistani has been detained in India for over 19 years.

Dr Khalil had gone to Ajmer in 1992 to see his brother and mother where, during a conflict at their house, a man was shot dead. The police also registered Dr Khaleel’s name in the FIR. The court conducted the hearing of case for 19 years and sentenced him to life imprisonment in January 2010.Dr Khalill did MSc in Microbiology and received PhD in Virology from Edinburgh University. He had been teaching for several years in Saudi Arabia, Iran and Nigeria and served on higher postings.Various prominent Indians, including film director Mahesh Bhatt, Jatin Desai and Kuldip Nayyar have appealed to the Indian president to release Dr Khalil on humanitarian grounds.
