Pakistan, India hold water talks in Lahore
Both the sides will negotiate on disputed Indian hydropower projects.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Two-day Pakistan-India Permanent Indus Commission have begun in Lahore headquarters of the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak).
Both the sides will negotiate on disputed Indian hydropower projects in violation of Indus Water Treaty.
A nine-member Indian delegation, led by Indian Water Commissioner, P. K. Saxena reached the provincial capital yesterday through Wagah border for the talks.
Pakistan Water Commissioner Syed Mehr Ali Shah, who welcomed the Indian delegation at the border, will lead his side.
During the talks, Pakistan will reiterate its serious reservations over construction of 1000-MW Pakal Dul and 48-MW Lower Kalnai hydroelectric projects on two different tributaries of River Chenab by India.
It is pertinent here to mention that Indian Prime Minister Modi, on several occasions, has vehemently announced to scrap Indus Waters Treaty, an agreement signed between India and Pakistan in 1960.
According to this agreement, control over the three eastern rivers was given to India, while control over the three western rivers was given to Pakistan.
