CJP says will not spare those who have ruined the PIA

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News): Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar Thursday ordered placement of all former managing directors of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) - who served from 2008 to 2018 - on the Exit Control List (ECL).

The order came as the Supreme Court heard a case pertaining to alleged financial irregularities and privatization of the national-flag carrier.

As the hearing went under way, the CJP remarked that PIA MDs had ruined the organization.

The counsel for the PIA told the court there were 10 ATRs, 12 777 and 10 airbuses. The CJP asked if 32 aircrafts were enough for the PIA.

Justice Aijaz ul Ahsan asked if all the 32 planes are owned by the PIA to which the PIA’s lawyers said that some had been leased. He told the court that the organization was paying a rent of $735,000 per month of a plane that had been grounded for the nine last months. He added that a hefty sum of Rs 350 billion had been spent on grounded planes.

He said that several inquiries were approved against those responsible but the Sindh High Court ordered stay against them. The counsel for the PIA informed the court that 916 cases pertaining to the PIA were pending in courts of law. “Of them 500 plus are related to fake degrees.”

He said that there was no plan in sight to privatize the PIA. He said that the PIA had suffered a loss of $360 billion after 2000 to which the CJP said that those who had ruined the organisation won t be spared
