(Dunya News) – Wearing helmet is one of the most essential components of road safety for motorcyclists. However, many refuse to wear helmets risking their lives while driving on the road.

Not wearing helmets is illegal on the roads in Pakistan. Clause 87 of Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965 states that anyone riding a motorcycle on the road must wear a helmet and follow the traffic rules.

A wide variety of helmets in varying price ranges is also present for motorcyclists.

In Lahore, people refuse to follow the traffic rules, which has resulted in a high number of tickets being given to motor cyclists found violating traffic rules.

According to traffic police, last year, 532,763 people without helmets were charged with tickets.
Meanwhile, since the beginning of this year, traffic police has already issued 165,772 tickets to motorcycle riders for not wearing helmets.

The reasons given by most motorcyclists range from feeling choked, not being in the habit of wearing one or failure to concentrate well while wearing a helmet.

Traffic officials state that despite strict laws people refuse to wear helmets. Accidents involving riders not wearing helmets has increased since past year, where more than 100,000 people suffered with severe injuries.
