Condolences pour in as Pakistan mourns the loss of its human rights champion - Asma Jahangir

(Web Desk) – Following the death of Pakistan s renowned lawyer Asma Jahangir in Lahore on Sunday, condolences poured in as people took to the social networking website Twitter to mourn over the loss of the country s most vocal human rights champion.

Jahangir, a human rights lawyer, was also Pakistan’s first woman to serve the President of Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan.

According to Dunya News, Jahangir was shifted to hospital after she felt pain on her left side. She could, however, not sustain the cardic arrest and expired.

One of the most iconic outspoken human rights campaigner, Jahangir completed her LLB from University of the Punjab following her graduation from Kinnard College.

She was awarded with numerous prestigious awards nationally and internationally, which include Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in 1995. In Pakistan, she was awarded with Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2010 along with various other awards.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, former premier Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif, Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan and others expressed sorrow over Asma Jahangir’s demise.
