The law permits holding of Senate elections after Balochistan's dissenting group has resigned.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Sources privy to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) have reported on Monday that resignations of Balochistan lawmakers would not affect Senate elections.

Reportedly, the law permits holding of Senate elections after Balochistan’s dissenting group has resigned as the seated MPAs would cast their votes and fresh senators would still be sworn in.

However, Governor of Balochistan is entitled to dissolving the assembly if no-confidence motion against chief minister (CM) Sanaullah Zehri is approved in the assembly and new government is not formed.

Dissolution of Balochistan Assembly would postpone the Senate elections by three months, it should be added.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Nawaz Sharif had branded resigning MPAs part of a conspiracy that allegedly is being hatched against the government to postpone Senate elections.

Chief of the ruling political front had further said that the elections would be held on time anyway.

Earlier today, Prime Minister (PM) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi arrived in Quetta in bid to resolve the political crisis however, dissenting ministers had asserted in a press conference last week that the visit would not influence their decision.

Balochistan Assembly opposition leader said today that the lawmakers have adopted a constitutional way to replace Balochistan CM which should not be objected to.
