(Dunya News) – New Year has brought a new wave of cold in the province of Punjab and elsewhere in the country.

A dense fog has cloaked Lahore and other major cities in the province, which has affected the lives of commuters during the mornings. To curb road accidents motorway has closed down different intersections. Dense fog has not only affected people commuting via roads, but it has also caused delays in the schedules of trains and commercial flights.

Temperatures are predicted to drop further during the week. The fog has engulfed many cities in Punjab, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Fasialabad and Sahiwal.

The thick fog has disrupted road traffic paralysing routine life. Motorway is temporarily closed in several places to avoid any road accidents, with the routes from Lahore to Pindi Bhatiyan and Fasialabad to Gojrah are briefly shut for traffic.

Trains are moving slowly due to low visibility and many commercial flights were cancelled. National Highway also saw less traffic due to the fog.

In other parts of the country, temperatures have dropped swiftly. The lowest temperature recorded was -9 in Astore in Gilgit-Baltistan, Quetta -8, -7 in Hunza and -5 in Ziarat.

Meteorologists have stated that in the next 24 hours rains are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Malakand, Hazara, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, and snow is expected in the northern regions of Pakistan.
