Drains are yet to be cleared in the city

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Heavy shower in the city is forecast today by meteorological department while rains are expected with thunder in Islamabad, and parts of Punjab, Balochistan and Kashmir, reported Wednesday.

Sources reveal that the Sindh government is not geared up to tackle any untoward situation arising by the second spell of the monsoon downpours.

Rain water is likely to inundate low-lying areas of the city. Besides different areas of the city, coastal areas are likely to have heavy showers today.

Hyderabad, Badin, Mirpurkhas are among different areas of Sindh that are expecting shower.

In the coming 24 hours, rains with lightening have been forecast in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kalat, Naseerabad, Makran and Kashmir.

The first spell of monsoon rains had left Karachi locals in trouble with issues involving power outages and lack of potable water while their movement was limited due to waterlogged roads.

Sindh government had vowed to take steps required to clear drains before the monsoon hit but nothing was done.

However, after the first spell, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah chaired an emergency meeting and ordered release of Rs 200 million to clear drain before the second spell.

With reports of rainfall starting today on one hand, despite release of funds drains are yet to be cleared on the other.

Karachi, a city of over 20 million residents is worst hit by both the monsoon and heatwave almost every year but the government resorts to mere empty rhetorics time and again, said experts.
