Hike in power tariff: SC seeks explanation from NEPRA
Hearing a suo moto notice of corruption charges in Rental Power Plants (RPPs), the Supreme Court sought explanation from NEPRA about the rise in power tariff, Dunya News reported on Friday. The Supreme Court Friday issued notices to Chairman (NEPRA) and former and existing officials of Wapda during suo moto hearing of corruption charges in Rental Power Projects (RPPs). Parliamentary leader of the PML-Q in National Assembly Faisal Saleh Hayat confessed that the RPPs that were installed during his period were misappropriated and thus action should be taken in this respect. He told the three-member SC bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry, that the NEPRA has permitted installation of those power plants, which had passed their operation life. The Chief Justice remarked that the court will only hear the legal points and asked Hayat to present evidences to back his claims. The court later put off hearing of the case till October 26.
