Reduction in cost of agricultural outputs is among government's priorities, says PM

LODHRAN (Dunya News) – Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif on Friday has distributed cheques among farmers under Kissan package and said that Pakistan’s prosperity lies with the welfare of farmers.

He distributed cheques among farmers under the controversial Kissan package and addressed a gathering today in Lodhran.

The PM posed a question, “Why opposition which claims to be pro-farmers is creating problems since announcement of the package?” Nawaz said that the reduction in cost of agricultural outputs is among government’s priorities.

Nawaz said that Kissan Package is worth at least Rs 341 billion which is the highest any previous government could allocate for the purpose. While addressing the cheque-distributing ceremony, Nawaz said that Lodhran would be connected with motorway also.

The premier once again gave a push to people’s expectations by saying that the last months of year 2017 will see a complete end to power outages.

Earlier today, PTI secretary general Jahangir Tareen wrote a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) urging action against PM s visit. The letter stated that the PM would announce Rs 10 billion development package for Lodhran which could influence by-election in favour of PML-N candidate. It should be mentioned here that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued schedule of by-election in NA-154 constituency.

He urged the CEC to take immediate notice of Prime Minister’s visit.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) spokesperson said that PML-N’s approach behind farmers’ package is to further the campaign. He stated that the package does not aim at bringing prosperity in agriculture sector by facilitating farmers.

Haq said that had PM Nawaz was actually aware of the needs of famers, he would have cut diesel price by at least Rs 18. He said that farmers know what the ruling party did to them is brutal and could only be called “economic murder.”

Nawaz is eyeing votes to prolong tenure in government and has offered the package as bait, he added. He termed PM Nawaz’s address in Lodhran and distribution of cheques a “pre-poll rigging stunt.”
