Train accident: Death toll reaches 17, investigation starts
4-member committee comprising of army and Railways officials to submit report in 72 hours
GUJRANWALA: (Dunya News) – Death toll in Gujranwala train accident has on Friday reached 17. A 4-member team comprising of army and Pakistan Railways officials that will submit the inquiry report within 72 hours, reported Dunya News.
According to the details, death toll in the train accident that took place on Thursday near Gujranwala has risen to 17. General Raheel Sharif visited the injured and offered the funeral prayers of the martyrs. Army’s relief activities are continued near the Head Chhanwaan and 4 more dead bodies have on Friday been found among which one body was unidentified. The dead were identified as Subedaar Major Islam, Naik Arif Naseer.
A meeting, chaired by Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, held in Lahore, also decided to provide financial assistance to the families of the martyrs.

Dead body of Major Aamir’s 15-year old son was also found today. While Army Chief arrived in Gujranwala to offer the funeral prayers of the dead and visit the injured, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered formation of the investigation team comprising army and Railways officials to inquire the matter. The investigative team includes a brigadier and a general from army’s Engineering Corps and a federal government inspector Mian Arshad and a GM Humayun Rasheed. Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has formally started working.

The engine and the bogies are also being inspected along with the scene of accident. The investigative team will also record the statements of the injured assistant driver, guard and the other witnesses. JIT is going to submit its report within 72 hours.
A special meeting was held in Lahore under the headship of Khawaja Saad Rafique in which various aspects of the accident were examined while financial assistance for the martyrs was also decided upon. According to Railways spokesperson, it may take around 3 days to extricate all the engine and bogies of the water while repair of the track may take more than 2 weeks.
