Court may announce verdict for US suspects tomorrow
Anti-terrorist court of Sargodha concluded the trial of five Americans charged with terrorism and is expected to announce its verdict in the next 24 hours. The trial was concluded today and the judge has said that he will announce his decision sometime tomorrow, defence lawyer Hassan Katchela told media. We hope that they will be acquitted, Katchela said. Public prosecutor Nadeem Akram Cheema said the government would appeal any acquittal. Aged 19 to 25, the Americans have been on trial in a closed anti-terrorism court behind prison walls in Sargodha, where they were arrested in December on charges of plotting a terror attack. Seven charges were filed against Umar Farooq, Waqar Hussain, Rami Zamzam, Ahmad Abdullah Mini and Amman Hassan Yammer. They were indicted in March and face life in prison if convicted. All deny the accusations, saying they came to Pakistan to attend a wedding and intended to travel onto Afghanistan to do humanitarian work.
