Supreme Court: Sindh Police cannot award contracts for vehicle purchase
If contract would be nullified, they will renew it through lawful authority: Farooq H Naik
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday declared that the Sindh police have no authority to assign contract of vehicle purchases worth Rs 1 billion and 23 million. To which Farooq H Naik said that if contract would be nullified, Sindh government will renew it through lawful authority.
The case was heard by the three- member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Harsh words were also exchanged between the bench members and Sindh police’s lawyer Irfan Qadir.
Justice Jawad S Khawaja inquired about who signed the contract? To which Irfan Qadir said that the court should prepare a list of questions first and then the defense will give their arguments. To this, Justice Ijaz Chaudhary asked Qadir to avoid improper language for the respected court. Qadir became furious when the judges called him using the informal Urdu word ‘tum’ meaning ‘you’ and asked Justice Ijaz to respect his seniority. Justice Ijaz replied that the bench might go to the length of canceling the license of the lawyer if the defense council didn’t behave.
The court said that it is a serious case and involves public interest as the expense of contract will come from public’s money; only Home Secretary has the authority to assign such a contract, the bench maintained.
The court adjourned the hearing until Thursday. Sindh government’s attorney Farooq H Naik said that he has become a Senator and that he could not come for the hearing because of oath taking ceremony. Justice Jawad S Khawaja congratulated him on becoming a senator and said that he can come for the hearing after taking the oath.
