Massive rain spell cause further surge at Hunza Lake

Owing to continued rain spell overnight splashing across the entire Hunza valley including Attabad, the water level of Attabad Lake has surged further, measuring 380 feet, while the water is now merely in few feet away from the spillway. Low lying areas are already experiencing minor flooding. Pakistan Army and other NGO organizations have speedup up relief and rescue activities.Experts believe that water can exit the lake anytime, however, it may also take a few days. The water from the lake even entered into National Banks Hunza branch. The Gilgit-Baltistan administration is continuously monitoring the situation. Police, Rangers and Gilgit scouts are on high alert. The rescue teams are in full swing and are actively involved in transferring people to safe areas.The affectees residing at the relief camps have protested against the government for providing inadequate facilities. The protesters caused blockages on various points at Karakoram Highway from Rawalpindi to Gilgit, which will deal heavy blow to the relief activities underway in Atta Abad.The protesters chanted slogans against the government, they said that they were not given advance warning by the government regarding the natural disaster and complained that the government is not doing enough to help the trapped people. The protesters demanded the government to compensate for their crops which have been badly affected due to the severe weather conditions prevailing in the region. The protesters say they would continue to protest until their demands are not met.
