ATC indicts Musharraf in Akbar Bugti murder case
Musharraf was the army chief when the operation against Bugti was ordered.
QUETTA (Web Desk) – An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Quetta has indicted former president Pervez Musharraf in the murder case of Baloch tribal leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, Dunya News reported on Wednesday.
Bugti was killed in a cave on August 26, 2006, during a military crackdown ordered by Musharraf who was the president and army chief at the time. Bugti had led an armed campaign to press for provincial autonomy and a greater share of profits in Balochistan s natural resources.
Musharraf, who is currently residing in Karachi, did not appear in court on the account of health issues. His lawyer Zeeshan Cheema represented him in the case.
The case has been adjourned till February 4.
Since returning to Pakistan from self-exile in March last year, Musharraf is facing prosecution in four major cases, including Bugti s killing and for his alleged involvement in the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007.
Musharraf was also indicted last year for high treason for suspending, subverting and abrogating the Constitution, imposing an emergency in the country in November 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts.
The former military ruler, who is the first military ruler in Pakistan s history to be tried in court, has rejected all charges levelled against him.
