Justice Sardar Raza Khan nominated new CEC

Justice Sardar Ahmad Raza is currently serving as Chief Justice of Federal Shariah Court Justice.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Justice Sardar Ahmad Raza has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Thursday.

Talking to the media, members of the parliamentary committee said three names viz Justice (Retd) Tanveer Ahmad, Chief Justice of Federal Shariah Court Justice (Retd) Sardar Raza and Justice (Retd) Tariq Pervez were recommended to the committee by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah and Federal Minister Finance Ishaq Dar and none of the members objected to the name.

Senetor Rafique Rajwana said he hopes that the new CEC carries out elections transparently within the premises of the constitution declaring appointment of CEC imperative to democracy.

He said Prime Minister would be informed of the decision through a letter after which PM would issue a notice for formal appointment of CEC.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf did not participate in the session.

Justice Sardar Ahmad Raza is serving as Chief Justice of Federal Shariah Court and would now have to resign from his poition to take up the post of CEC.

Khursheed Shah called Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Jamat e Islami (JI) Ameer Sirajul Haq, Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfand Yar Wali and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) senior leader Farooq Sattar and Faroogh Nasim and informed them of the names being considered whereas Ishaq Dar contacted Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Aftab Sherpao, Ijazul Haq, Hasil Bazinjo and leaders of Jamat e Ullema Islam Fazl (JUI-F).

Talking to the media on Wednesday, Ishaq Dar informed that three names have been shortlisted and would now be sent to Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Saddiq.

He said he was hopeful that the matter would be resolved before the deadline ends.

“I believe that parliamentary committee would take a wise decision.” said Minister Finance.

Leader of the Opposition said political maturity has been exhibited in the appointment of CEC adding that the delay occurred to due objections raised by other parties.

Consultation with other parties over the appointment of CEC was not constitutional right but considered it a moral obligation, he added.
