Nawaz Sharif and Khursheed Shah are likely to meet today to discuss CEC appointment.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News)—Attorney General of Supreme Court Salman Aslam Butt on Monday told the court that a meeting has been scheduled between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the Leader of Opposition Khursheed Shah today to discuss the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). A positive development is expected by tomorrow regarding the appointment of CEC.

A three member bench headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk heard the case regarding the appointment of permanent CEC. Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt took a stance that Prime Minister and Opposition Leader were in touch over telephone during their foreign visits.

He added that a solid progress has been made in this matter as both leaders would meet today to discuss the appointment of CEC. CJ Nasirul Mulk inquired by asking if the process of appointment would complete by today to which Salman Aslam Butt replied that he is hopeful that CEC’s appointment would come off today.

Chief Justice asked the Attorney General to assure that a permanent CEC would be appointed by December 5. On the request of Attorney General there was a brief interval during the hearing of the case after which Salman Aslam Butt told the court that Nawaz Sharif is in Karachi to meet Khursheed Shah over the CEC appointment.

He told the court that a positive development is expected regarding the appointment. Only after the meeting the entire situation would be cleared and he would be in a better position to offer assurance to Supreme Court by tomorrow. The court, therefore, delayed the hearing of the case until tomorrow (Tuesday).
