Four killed as US drone targets militant compound in North Waziristan
The drone fired two missiles on a compound in Dattakhel area.
MIRANSHAH (Web Desk) – At least four suspected militants were killed in a US drone strike in North Waziristan tribal region on Wednesday morning, Dunya News reported.
The unmanned drone fired two missiles on a compound in Dattakhel area. The identities of the militants could not be ascertained.
The attack comes two days after Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Mullah Fazlullah narrowly escaped a US drone strike in the border region of Afghanistan in which five militants were killed.
Fazulllah was in Nazyan village of Nangarhar province of Afghanistan near Pakistan border when a drone targeted him on Monday night.
Pakistan routinely protests against US drone strikes, which have been targeting militants in the tribal areas since 2004, saying they are a violation of sovereignty and counterproductive in the fight against terror.
Pakistan s semi-autonomous tribal areas on the Afghan border have for years been a hideout for militants of all stripes -- including Al-Qaeda and the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uighurs.
Pak Army launched an operation code-named ‘Zarb-e-Azb’ in mid-June to clear militant hideouts from the region.
So far, more than 1200 militants have been killed and 86 soldiers have been martyred during the ongoing offensive.
