JAMRUD (Dunya News) — Militants attempted an attack on the check post in Ghundi area near Jamrud Bazar on Sunday night, Dunya News reported. Timely retaliation by security forces, however, thwarted the attack by killing 6 militants.

According to the authorities, the attackers hailed from Hangu, Mardan, Swabi and Charsadda. The dead bodies of the attackers have been taken into custody by the security officials. The area has been sealed and a security operation has begun.

The town of Jamrud is located near the Afghan border in Khyber Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan.

The clashes between militants and security officials are quite common in Jamrud and the nearby areas including Ghundi and Malik Shagga. The town has road and rail linkages with Peshawar and a pass connects it with Landi Kotal.

According to official sources, the militants often take the route from Peshawar or Bara to enter Jamrud to carry out terrorist activities.

A target operation by security forces against the militants in Khyber Agency is underway for past few months.

In 2012 bombing occurred in Khyber Agency on 10 January, when a bomb exploded near a petrol pump in the town of Jamrud. The bombing killed at least 30 people while 78 others were injured.
