PM Nawaz orders to expedite relief activities in flood-hit areas
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appreciated armys role in relief activities.
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Saturady chaired a meeting to review flood situation in different areas of the country, Dunya News reported.
On the occasion, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Saeed Aleem briefed the premier about the ongoing relief activities and measures being taken at district, provincial and national levels to cope with the prevailing situation.
The NDMA chief informed that heavy monsoon downpours caused flashfloods in Azad Kashmir as well as in north-east Punjab. He said 110 people have died and 148 people have been injured in rain-related incidents in Punjab, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan. He said 650 houses were completely destroyed.
He told the meeting that there is flooding in Chenab and Jhelum seasonal while nullahs, especially in Gujranwala and Rawalpindi are also flooded.
Flood levels at Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad are very high. Flood level in Jhelum River and Mangla reservoir is exceptionally high while water level at Rasul headworks is at medium level. Remaining all rivers flowing normally.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif directed the concerned authorities to expedite relief activities in flood-hit areas
“Leave no stone unturned to help the people in distress,” he said.
He directed that evacuation of people and livestock should be carried out immediately while all national highways opened for traffic by tonight.
He said that concerned departments should immediately start damage assessment for speedy rehabilitation.
