Political, military leaderships deliberate on national security, peace talks
The emergency meeting convened as Army Chief reached PM House along with DG ISI.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – An emergency meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to discuss national security was convened here on Tuesday. The meeting also reviewed developments of Taliban negotiations, Dunya News reported.
The session diverted from its original schedule of 3:30 pm but convened as an emergency session after Army Chief General Raheel Sharif reached Prime Minister House along with Director General (DG) Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and other military personnel.
The meeting was also attended by defence minister Khawaja Asif, interior minister Chaudhry Nisar and special assistant Tariq Fatmi.
The matters of national security and Taliban negotiations came under discussion. The leadership also deliberated on future strategy.
Earlier, PM chaired an informal consultative meeting in Islamabad to discuss key issues.
The meeting was attended by Defense Minister Khwaja Muhammad Asif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid.
According to sources, the meeting reviewed process of negotiation with Taliban and former president Pervez Musharraf’s request for removal of his name from the Exit Control List (ECL).
The sources said that most of the party members have suggested not removing former president’s name from ECL. The party leaders suggested the PM that decision of allowing Musharraf to leave the country would cast negative impacts. The meeting could not reach the final decision regarding Musharraf issue, the sources added.
The sources further said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to hold through consultation over the issue. They added that the PM would also consult other political parties over the issue after which the final decision would be made regarding removal of Musharraf’s name from ECL.
