Pakistan wants trade not aid from US: PM

The Prime Minister said Pakistan is an emerging market due to its strategic location.

WASHINGTON (Web Desk) - Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has invited the American entrepreneurs to invest in Pakistan‚ availing tremendous business opportunities offered by his government.

He was addressing a gathering of prominent business leaders at the US-Pakistan Business Council in Washington.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan is an emerging market due to its strategic location‚ a large hardworking workforce and huge economic potential.

He said his government has embarked upon a clear roadmap of bringing macro-economic stability in Pakistan in next three years.

Nawaz Sharif said his government is making the required national investments and attracting more from overseas to develop trade and energy corridors‚ linking the ports in the South to Northern Pakistan and onwards to China‚ Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan is determined to pursue regional peace and security‚ seeking good neighborly relations with India‚ Afghanistan and the rest of the countries in the region.

In his remarks‚ the Chairman US-Pakistan Business Council‚ Miles Young vowed his full support in advancing commercial relations between the United States and Pakistan.

He noted that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif s economic reforms proposals to speed up economic growth have attracted attention of the US businesses.

He called for the creation of US-Pakistan Business Forum to discuss practical issues.

Meanwhile‚ Addressing the Pakistan community in Washington the Prime Minister said his government is giving top priority to overcome the energy crisis to stabilize the national economy.

He said the government will provide relief in power tariff to the people after enhancing its production to a certain level.

The Prime Minister said all out efforts are being made to establish peace in the country through dialogue with Taliban.

He said strict laws are also being enacted to eliminate terrorism and bring criminals to book without any discrimination.
Nawaz Sharif said the PML-N government wants to promote peace in the region for political and economic stability of South Asia.

He said Pakistan wishes to resolve all the outstanding issues with India including Kashmir through dialogue.

Earlier, US Trade Representative Michael Froman called on Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in Washington and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.
