(Web Desk) - At least 14 persons have been detected with the dengue virus during the last 24 hours in Punjab, bringing the tally of dengue patients to 143.

According to details, 5 out of 14 patients including Aslam, Saba, Tahira, Fahad and Yousaf have been shifted to Mayo hospital, while Arifa, Asma, Rubeena and Almas have been shifted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

One patient named Adnan has been shifted to Services hospital whereas Waqar is under treatment at Victor Hospital Bahawalpur.

The number of dengue-affected patients has been on the rise in Punjab.

Dengue affects between 50 and 100 million people in the tropics and subtropics each year, resulting in fever, muscle and joint ache.

But it can also be fatal, developing into haemorrhagic fever and shock syndrome, which is characterised by bleeding and a loss of blood pressure.

Caused by four strains of virus spread by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, there is no vaccine -- which is why prevention methods focus on mosquito control.

It has attracted the attention of the Government of Pakistan, especially the Punjab Government since it is widespread in that particular province of the country.

As of November 2011, it had killed over 300 people and over 14,000 were infected by this mosquito-borne disease. Majority of the people infected were from Lahore.
