Ex-Ogra chief Tauqir Sadiq is suspected of causing a loss of Rs82 billion to the national exchequer.

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday revealed how former oil & gas regulatory authority (OGRA) chief Tauqir Sadiq had escaped Pakistan to avoid arrest.

According to NAB spokesperson, Tauqir Sadiq has revealed that he had paid only Rs1000 bribe to an Afghan official at the Kabul airport.

However, Tauqir Sadiq did not name any individual for having assisted him in his escape.

“When individuals responsible on helping him escape will be identified, action will be initiated by NAB in accordance with the law,” the official said.

The inquiry was conducted by a senior director general of the National Accountability Bureau.

Earlier, it was reported in the media that Tauqir Sadiq fled the country by paying only Rs1000 bribe to a border guard at Pakistan’s Torkham border to cross into Afghanistan in June 2012.

On May 9, a Rawalpindi accountability court handed over Sadiq to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on 14-day remand.

Tauqir Sadiq is suspected of causing a loss of Rs 82 billion to the national exchequer when he was head of Pakistan’s oil and gas regulatory authority between 2009 and 2011, at around the same time that Mr Ashraf was water and power minister.

He fled abroad after the Supreme Court declared his appointment illegal on Nov 25, 2011, and ordered the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to start an investigation against him.
