'Media reports on Abbottabad Commission misleading'
Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal has refuted foreign media reports on Abbottabad Commission report.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Talking to Dunya News, Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal said that news circulating in foreign media regarding Abbottabad Commission report are baseless and misleading.
He said that the report not only identified those who were responsible for the incident but also reviewed the role of different institutions.
The report, leaked to Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera which circulated it late on Monday, offered astonishing details about life on the run for the world’s most wanted man.
Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal said that main purpose of the commission was to review performance of country’s institutions and statements of all witnesses were recorded during investigation.
He informed that the commission report contains more than 100 recommendations but the foreign media failed to highlight even one of those.
Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal further said that the Abbottabad Commission had handed over its report to Prime Minister of Pakistan on January 2, 2013. He said it is government responsibility to punish those responsible for the incident.
CIA spies tracked down bin Laden to the northwestern town of Abbottabad, where he was shot dead by US Navy SEALs on May 2, 2011 during the dramatic raid near Pakistan s military academy.
It was one of the most humiliating episodes in Pakistan s history and exposed the country to allegations of incompetence or to trace the world s most wanted man.
The government set up the judicial commission shortly after the raid to investigate after parliament demanded an independent enquiry.
It interviewed senior civilian and military officials and bin Laden s three widows before they were deported to Saudi Arabia. But its findings were kept secret until the Al-Jazeera news network published them on Monday.
