Islamabad: Police shot dead a suicide bomber at check post

Islamabad police shot dead an alleged suicide bomber and were chasing two others in Islamabad. Police said three suspects were driving through Islamabad in a black car. One of the suspects was about to detonate himself near a police check post when he was shot dead. Police said two others managed to flee adding that the police have recovered a suicide jacket from the dead bomber. A bomb disposal squad has defused the suicide jacket that the bomber was wearing, police officials said. The Inspector General of Islamabad, Kaleem Imam, confirmed the incident to media and said that three suspects were signaled to stop at a police check post in E-11 sector of the capital. When one of the suspects got down from car and tried to reach the checkpoint, police opened fire and gunned down him, he said. We have been receiving lot of intelligence reports in view of the operation which is going on in Waziristan and we have been able to nab a number of terrorists. More than 72 terrorists have been arrested in Islamabad which includes a number of suicidal, and this is one more. And this is very good professional work by the police officers. They risked their lives and they performed very well in stopping this man from bringing some collateral damage, he said. Imam said the police was chasing the two fleeing suspects. The incident took place amid high security alert in the capital. Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber killed an anti-Taliban village mayor and 15 other people in an attack on the outskirts of Pakistan's volatile city of Peshawar on Sunday.
