Premiership race: PPP fails to convince JUI-F Chief

JUI-F Chief was asked to withdraw as PM candidate in the favour of Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

A delegation of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and other leaders of the allied parties met Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday to convince him to withdraw from premiership race.The meeting was held few hours before the Parliament is due to vote for a new prime minister.Addressing a joint news conference with Syed Khurshid Shah, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said he would make any decision about contesting election for the post of Prime Minister in consultation with his party leaders.Earlier today, the PPP formally nominated Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to be their candidate for the post of prime minister.While responding to PPP’s latest move, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said it would have been better if he had been consulted before nominating Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.Fazlur Rehman said that his candidature for the post of Prime Minister was aimed at reducing tension in the countrys political atmosphere.Speaking on the occasion‚ Syed Khurshid Shah said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman has remained PPP’s coalition partner for four years and the party will stand with him to strengthen the democracy.
