Video of Olympics opening ceremony protests in 2024 is fake
The video originally shared in August 2022 by the Catholic pilgrimage site
(Web Desk) - A video of a large crowd gathered at a popular Catholic pilgrimage site for a religious holiday has been miscaptioned online to say it shows thousands of Christians protesting the Olympic Games opening ceremony in July 2024.
Olympics organizers apologized on July 28 to Catholics and Christian groups following a controversial “The Last Supper” interpretation that featured drag queens.
The artistic director of the ceremony said it had instead been inspired by a pagan feast to the gods of Olympus.
An Instagram video showing a large crowd at night includes text that says, “BREAKING Thousands of Christians in France gathered to pray after Olympics opening mocked Jesus Christ.”
The said video was actually shared on Aug 14, 2022 by the official X account of the Sanctuary of Lourdes with the caption, “Beautiful and happy Feast of the Assumption to all. In union of prayer with all Catholics of the world. May the Virgin Mary shine in your hearts.”
It was also posted to the Facebook account of the Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary of Lourdes did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Reuters.
