(Reuters) - Social media users are sharing a video of a Midland Public Schools board of education meeting in Michigan where a community member claimed that litter boxes were placed in student restrooms for those who identify as “furries”. The superintendent of Midland Public Schools said this was false.

Examples can be seen (here) and (here) .

The text in one post reads: “WATCH: At a recent school board meeting, it was revealed that a Michigan school placed a LITTER BOXES in the bathroom for students that identify as cats. Unbelievable.”

The Midland Public Schools board of education meeting which took place on Dec. 20, 2021 can be seen (youtu.be/VDrxwMA36qw).

At the 33:52 mark, community member Lisa Hansen says: “It was addressed by a child a couple of months ago that they are put in an environment where there are kids that identify as a furry. A cat or a dog, whatever. And so, yesterday I heard that at least one of our schools in our town, has in one of the unisex bathrooms a litter box for the kids that identify as cats. And I am really disturbed by that.”

The “furry” culture consists of people with an interest in anthropomorphic creatures, who create their own animal character and interact in outfits known as “fursuits” (here), (here).

An email sent by Michael E. Sharrow, superintendent of Midland Public Schools, sent on Jan. 20, 2022 and published in a community Facebook group addressed the claims (here).

“Let me be clear in this communication. There is no truth whatsoever to this false statement/accusation!” a part of the statement said. “There have never been litter boxes within MPS schools.”

VERDICT
