Sharif started his career from Karachi as a stage performer at the age of 19 in 1974
KARACHI (Web Desk) - Comedy king Umer Sharif is being remembered on his second death anniversary by countless fans.
He was born on April 19, 1960 in Liaquatabad, Karachi. Sharif started his career from stage with the name of ‘Umer Zarif’. Later, he changed his name to Umer Sharif and never looked back in the field of stage, comedy and acting.
Umer Sharif started his career from Karachi as a stage performer at the age of 19 in 1974.
He released his dramas through audio cassettes for the first time in 1980 and his popularity crossed the border. Sharif also had a huge fan following in India.
Some of his popular comedy stage plays include ‘Bakra Qistoon Pe’, ‘Meri Bhi to Eid Kra Day’ and ‘Buddha Ghar Pe Hy’.
It is to his credit that he wrote scripts of more than 70 plays and became actor, director and writer at the same time.
Umer Sharif received two national awards - best director and best actor - in 1992. He was the only actor to receive four Nigar Awards in one single year. He was also a recipient of Tamgha-e-Imtiaz conferred upon him by the government of Pakistan.
Famous Indian comedians Johnny Lever and Raju Srivastav gave him the title of ‘The God of Asian Comedy’.
Umer Sharif died on Oct 2, 2021 in Germany after a protracted illness.
