Sea creatures take over the streets of Coney Island for the annual Mermaid Parade.

Impersonating sea creatures, people paraded through New Yorks famous Coney Island neighborhood for the 2011 Mermaid Parade.From Marilyn Monroe look alikes to toddler mermaids, streets were flooded with revellers celebrating the start of summer.Mermaids, Neptunes and an array of sea creatures participated in the procession. Even bicycles got ocean themed makeovers and circled through the festive crowd.The parade was founded in 1983 and is considered Coney Islands version of Mardi Gras.The parade is followed by the Mermaid Parade Ball, where costumed participants watch performances by some of the neighborhoods famed side show acts.
