Police arrest Egyptian singer Shyma over allegations of inciting debauchery
Police sources informed that people complained about the racy video of 'I Have Issues'
(Web Desk) – Egyptian police have arrested a popular singer Shyma over allegations of inciting debauchery after her music video caught the eyes of law enforcement officials and complaints were received.
Police sources informed that people complained about the racy video of "I Have Issues" in which she is “suggestively eating a banana”. She was also criticised for wearing lingerie and posing seductive.
Criticism also came from media circles. For instance, an article on Youm 7 newspaper related Shyma’s music video with “a lesson in depravity to youths”. The singer hasn’t been charged yet, but reports suggest that she has been banned from performing anywhere in the country.
After the flak and allegations of immoral behaviour, Shyma apologised to her fans on social media. She wrote on Facebook, “I apologize to all the people who saw the clip and were upset by it and took it in an inappropriate way,” adding that she had not imagined such a reaction and that she would be subjected to such a strong attack from everyone.
“(I have always) dreamt from a young age of being a singer,” she explained.
Under Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, similar cases have come to light in which young artistes were subjected to morality laws. Another female artist was arrested and jailed for one year during 2015 after her raunchy dance video “Let Go of My Hand” became viral over the social media.
