World artists honoured in Davos

As the world's political and business elite gathered at The World Economic Forum in Davos, it was three artists who stole the limelight at the annual Crystal Awards. The Awards are designed recognise those who make a positive contribution to society through their talent. Following the opening speech by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Canadian award winning author Margaret Atwood, veteran Austrian crooner Udo Jurgens and Chinese pianist Lang Lang were each honoured. Lang Lang, who made Time magazines 100 most influential people list for 2009, performed three compositions at the ceremony including a traditional Chinese piece. The pianist, who has spearheaded Haiti fund-raising events in recent weeks, spoke of the importance of art in improving the world. Former winners of the Crystal awards include actress Emma Thompson and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
