(Dunya News) – Khawaja Sira Palace, a non-formal high school in Faisalabad, aims to empower the transgender community with education and vocational training in the hopes of integrating them into the society as citizens with equal rights.

Dressed in green uniform, students participate enthusiastically in the classroom where they are taught English, Urdu and Mathematics.

The transgender community which has remained deprived of basic rights for long is now receiving education through evening classes at the centre. Along with regular education, they are also provided vocational training such as in grooming, allowing them financial independence.

Forty students of the transgender community are enrolled in the centre where they will receive non-formal education along with Rs. 2000 incentive each month.

The aim of the centre is to empower transgender community so as to ensure that through better skills, they find better jobs and a chance to make their way into the job market.

Administration of the centre explained that transgender persons are part of the society and should be treated equally, with provision of education being one of their basic rights.

Provided with free uniforms and books, the students expressed their joy and said that this was the first step towards becoming a responsible citizen of Pakistan.

Through this initiative socially deprived persons of the transgender community will make their way into the society as independent strong individuals.
