Shadab Khan likely to lose vice-captaincy ahead of New Zealand series

LAHORE (Web Desk) – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering the removal of all-rounder Shahdab Khan as vice-captain of T20I and ODI formats ahead of the New Zealand series, scheduled to begin in mid-April.

The 24-year-old, who led the Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has been serving as vice captain since 2020.

The reports come on the heels of Pakistan’s recent humiliating defeat in a three-match T201 series against Afghanistan. Shadab Khan was given the captaincy for the series after Babar Azam and other senior players were rested by the cricket board. He has also captained the team as stand-in captain in 2020 in a three-match series against New Zealand. Pakistan had lost the series by 2-1.

Reports said the PCB was expected to announce Shadab’ removal as vice-captain while naming the squad for the upcoming series against the Black Caps in coming days.

Meanwhile, the selection committee is interested in roping in Usma Mir to replace Shadab Khan as a player in the squad for matches against New Zealand.
