Food import bill increases by 22.31pc in 11 months

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Pakistan’s food import bill grew by 22.31 per cent during the 11 months of the current fiscal year mainly due to palm oil and tea imports to meet the domestic demand.

Data compiled by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) released on Friday stated that from July to May, palm oil imports increased by 56.1pc to Rs597.23 billion, compared to Rs382.60 billion in the same period last year, while tea imports increased by 18.24pc to Rs101.73 billion compared to Rs86 billion in the last year.

The Sugar imports increased by 55.21pc to Rs32.31 billion as against Rs20.82 billion in the same period last year.

While the wheat import from July to May was Rs138.51 billion, pulses import was Rs98.24 billion and dried fruit import was Rs 10.86 billion..
