Cotton production falls 23 percent in Pakistan

At least 55 lac bales/acre were sold to textile mills while 3.43 lac/acre bales were exported
LAHORE (Dunya News) – Cotton production in the ongoing season has failed to match last year’s yield with a margin of at least 23 percent.
According to the Cotton Ginners Forum, cotton yield in the season marked upto at least 80 lac bales per acre which is 23 percent lesser than 2014. At least 55 lac bales/acre were sold to textile mills while 3.43 lac/acre bales were exported.
On the other hand, cotton assessment committee has decreased production target to 10.13 million bales due to unfavourable climate. Cotton Ginners Forum Chairman Ahsanul Haq said that crops in Punjab have suffered more than those in Sindh due to weather shifts.
Farmers and the forum concerned have warned the government of sliding downwards from fourth position in world ranking among cotton producing countries if adequate steps are not taken to protect crops against changing weather.
