London's FTSE 100 index slumped 1.23 percent to 6,461.78 points compared with Tuesday's close.

LONDON (AFP) - Europe s leading stock markets fell sharply at the start of trading on Wednesday after the previous day s rally.

London s FTSE 100 index slumped 1.23 percent to 6,461.78 points compared with Tuesday s close.

Frankfurt s DAX 30 shed 1.31 percent to 9,810.70 points and the CAC 40 in Paris slid 1.46 percent in value to 4,227.46.

European indices had risen strongly on Tuesday, helped by expectations that regional interest rates would remain at very low levels for some time against a backdrop of sliding inflation.
