WASHINGTON (Dunya News) - US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced new and tougher economic sanctions against Iran, saying the measures are aimed at cutting off every economic lifeline supporting the country.
Speaking at a media briefing, Bessent said countries and entities engaging in economic cooperation with Iran would be given a limited period to comply.
After the deadline, those continuing to do business with Iran would face US action and sanctions, he warned.
He said countries maintaining economic ties with Iran would also be required to close branches of Iranian banks operating on their territory.

Bessent made it clear that Washington would use all available economic tools to restrict Iran’s financial and commercial activities.
The US Treasury secretary described the new campaign as part of a broader economic pressure strategy against Iran.
According to US officials, the scope of secondary sanctions is also being expanded to cover third countries and financial institutions conducting trade with Iran.
Iran has threatened a strong response following the announcement of the US measures, raising concerns that the latest developments could further escalate tensions in the region.
