Summary Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that Washington has established direct backchannel contacts with the IRGC

TEHRAN (Dunya News) - Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that Washington has established direct backchannel contacts with the IRGC, saying no talks are taking place between Iranian and American officials.

According to Iranian media, Mohebbi described Trump’s claim as baseless, saying such statements were the product of “illusions and nightmares” arising from the failure of the war.

He accused the US president of using claims about diplomatic contacts to influence oil and energy prices and shape perceptions of the current military and economic situation.

Mohebbi said Trump’s only remaining option was to acknowledge what he described as US defeat and accept Iran’s stated conditions.

Trump had told US media that his administration had established a direct backchannel with the IRGC. He also said he was in no hurry to end the conflict with Iran.

The conflicting statements underscore the deep mistrust between Washington and Tehran as tensions remain focused on the Strait of Hormuz, a potential ceasefire and prospects for future negotiations.

The latest dispute comes after the expiration on August 17 of a 60-day period established under a June 17 US-Iran memorandum of understanding.

The agreement had envisaged negotiations toward a final deal while addressing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of hostilities.
