SANAA (Web Desk) - At least 14 Yemeni government soldiers were killed in renewed fighting between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and government forces in western Yemen, according to military officials.

According to AFP, the clashes erupted in the Hays district, south of the western coastal province of Al Hudaydah, after Houthi fighters launched an attack on government military positions.

A military official affiliated with Yemen's government said the troops responded forcefully to the assault, triggering several hours of intense fighting.

The official said government forces successfully repelled the Houthi attack but lost 14 soldiers during the clashes.

He also claimed that Houthi fighters suffered casualties in the government's counterattack, although no figures were provided for those killed or wounded on the other side.

Al Hudaydah and its surrounding areas have remained a key frontline throughout Yemen's years-long civil war, with intermittent clashes continuing between the two sides despite previous ceasefire efforts.
